Achievement Stories
Some of our students have already changed the course of their lives thanks to the Internet, be it new passions, professions, or academic degrees. We add new stories monthly so check in for more stories on the magic of the Internet!
Meet Daniel - a dedicated student from Kakuma Refugee Camp who is turning his passion for technology into a tool to help his entire community.
Originally from South Sudan, Daniel grew up in a family of five children. When civil war broke out in 2013, they had to flee and find safety in Kenya. Daniel finished his primary and high school education in the camp, but without money for a university scholarship, his education hit a wall. Determined to keep learning, he joined digital courses at the Advocacy Initiative for Youth Development, eventually earning an advanced computer certificate.
Even with his new skills in graphic design and digital marketing, Daniel faced a big problem. Finishing school did not guarantee a job, and without a computer or the internet, he couldn't start working or even practice what he learned. He was stuck, unable to use his skills to earn a living.
Receiving a laptop and an internet connection from GiveInternet.org changed his perspective. He immediately shifted his focus to online work, setting up profiles on freelancing platforms like Upwork and Fiverr to offer digital marketing and logo design services. He is also currently pursuing his Bachelor's degree in Sustainable Development, and thanks to his home connection, he submits 100% of his assignments on time.
Daniel is passionate about empowering others. Every afternoon, he teaches Digital Citizenship classes to junior school kids and even shares his internet connection with his peers so they don't fall behind.
Working toward his dream of becoming a software engineer, Daniel is already making a huge impact. As he proudly puts it: "I am now a Humanitarian-tech educator, bringing a resilient future to African youth, one kid and one course at a time.
