Preparing Community Healthcare Workers in Kakuma Refugee Camp, in partnership with the University of Geneva.

Completed Project
Kenya Georgia

The University of Geneva’s InZone initiative, in collaboration with its Faculty of Medicine and local partners like the International Rescue Committee, operates a specialized Certificate of Open Studies (COS) in Community Health for residents of Kenya's Kakuma Refugee Camp. This intensive nine-month program is designed to build concrete medical capacity directly within the camp.

The curriculum covers essential pillars like maternal care and infectious diseases, while also training students on emerging humanitarian health challenges—such as diabetes, mental health, and climate impacts—and introducing modern approaches like artificial intelligence. To deliver a program of this depth in a displacement camp, InZone utilizes a blended model that combines physical workshops and clinical field projects with rigorous online learning.

However, the digital components of this curriculum create a significant practical barrier. While InZone provides the on-the-ground instruction and physical hubs, students lacking personal technology face a major challenge when trying to access online lectures, conduct research, or complete digital assignments outside of class hours.

GiveInternet.org partnered with InZone to address this hardware shortage. By equipping enrolled students in Kakuma with personal laptops and reliable internet connectivity, we ensure they have the independent tech access required to keep pace with the nine-month program. This equipment allows them to manage their digital coursework and fully acquire the skills needed to support their local health systems.

Kenya Kenya

As youth unemployment persists in Kenya, we help students in Kisumu build careers in AI, web and app development, cybersecurity, and blockchain. In Kakuma's refugee camps, laptops and home internet open life-changing opportunities where formal jobs are scarce. In Nairobi, we support youth from informal settlements studying coding and front-end development. Across all regions, we empower young women and refugee girls with devices and connectivity to complete training and pursue meaningful careers.
