Women and girls pursuing coding under Taliban rule

Program & Partners
Afghanistan Georgia

Since the Taliban returned to power in 2021, Afghanistan has become the only country in the world where girls and women are prohibited from secondary and higher education. More than 2.2 million girls are currently barred from attending secondary school, making access to online education more important than ever.

We partner with Code to Inspire - a 501(c)(3) nonprofit providing Afghan women and girls with coding training and opportunities to build careers in tech. Its 6–9 month programs cover web and software development, front-end and back-end development, full-stack development, mobile applications, game and graphic design, UI/UX, and other digital skills. Students also receive career support, including help with CVs and resumes and access to employment opportunities.

In a country where women and girls face severe restrictions on education and employment, digital skills open opportunities that would otherwise be impossible to access. But participating in these opportunities requires the right tools.

Through our partnership, GiveInternet.org provides Code to Inspire students with personal laptops and internet access, enabling them to continue learning, practice their skills independently, and pursue digital opportunities from home in a safe and secure way.

But more than that, for Afghan women and girls facing growing isolation, the internet is not just a tool for education and work — it is one of the few ways to stay connected to the wider world.

Social norms favoring boys' education. Caregiving duties. Limited access to education. Fewer mentors. Underrepresentation in tech. These are the barriers women across Africa face in pursuing tech careers. We're here to help change that, and that's why we partner with She Code Africa.
